Mr Baguneid graduated from University of Manchester in 1993 and followed a career in vascular surgery. Following his house officer year he accepted a position at Cardiff University as an Anatomy demonstrator.  He returned to the North West in 1995 and completed general surgical training in the North West and specialised in vascular surgery. During his training he spent 3 years carrying out research into the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts culminating in its presentation at the 2000 Tomorrows World Live Exhibition in London.

He has a major interest in teaching and training and was a member of the executive council of the Association of Surgeons in Training for 5 years, 2 years as the Yearbook editor and 3 years as the Treasurer.  Currently, he runs the north west core surgical teaching programme and is a Royal Colllege of Surgeons Tutor.

As a vascular specialist in a tertiary teaching hospital in South Manchester, he manages a wide range of vascular conditions including varicose veins, carotid disease for stroke prevention, abdominal aortic aneurysms and lower limb arterial insufficiency such as claudication and critical limb ischaemia. As part of his practice, he manages patients with vascular diseases in a holistic fashion addressing lifestyle issues and risk factor modification.

He routinely offers minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins and set up the EndoVenois Laser Service at the hospital.  Currently he runs national teaching workshops for Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) for consultants from around the country.

His current research interests include tissue engineering and investigations into biomarkers of atherosclerosis.  On an educational note, he also runs national courses for surgical trainees and has developed educational multimedia learning packages (www.surgicalcourses.com).
